Most people are familiar, or at least aware of, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and an assortment of terrorist groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad operating from the Gaza Strip. What is less well known is the art work of Israeli sculptor Yaron Bob who transforms what were once Qassam rockets into beautiful metal flower sculptures. Each piece is made from the metal of actual rockets that fell into Israel which were intended to maim and kill innocent civilians.

Yaron Bob is a blacksmith and teacher who lives near the Gaza border and has experienced the terror that Qassam rockets bring first-hand. His frustration with the violent situation led him to create works of art that symbolised the desire for peace that the majority of Israelis desire to have with their Arab neighbours. The remains of the rockets of given to Bob by the police after they have been checked by a bomb squad.

“I take the Kassam, the instrument of death and I change it, I transfer it into something of beauty.” – Yaron Bob

A portion of the proceeds from sales of his work go to the important non-profit organization Operation Lifeshield which helps raise money to build bomb shelters in the Israeli city of Ashkelon which also suffers from Qassam rocket attacks. Yaron Bob has transformed hundreds of these rockets into floral sculptures, candle-sticks and key rings which have been sold worldwide. By transforming instruments of death into items of beauty, the sculptor hopes to convey a message of hope, life and peace.

You can read a lot more about the metal flowers and their creator on the website ‘Rockets for Roses’. From there you can also make a purchase as well as watch videos of the Qassam rockets being transformed into sculptures.
