What would you do if you saw a dilapidated classic 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville about to be sent to the scrapyard? If you’re anything like Californian furniture designer Tom Conci, you would turn the back half of the car into a sofa and place it in your living room. That’s indeed precisely what the motor-loving designer did a few years ago and so beginning a passion for transforming old cars into items of furniture for his family home.

It was actually Tom’s wife who first gave him the idea for converting old classic cars into furniture pieces. He has since created a variety of items for the home which include a television from a Porsche 911 and a toy chest from a 1980s Mercedes 380SL coupe. Another old Porsche forms the basis for an entertainment centre which boasts 40-inch TV electronically emerging from the back of the car at the flick of a button while the brake lights flash.

Conci has recently gone into business with San Francisco businessman Ron Orozco and have together set up the company ‘Vroom Dicor’. Instead of purely personal car furniture pieces, the duo will sell their creations to buyers worldwide. This comes at a good time for Conci and his wife as they have plans to downsize their home and any more converted furniture items will be too large for their new living requirements. However, selling his products to others means he can continue with his passion.

The beauty of nature becomes powerfully obvious to us all during a thunderstorm when the clouds in the night sky are briefly illuminated with electricity. Artists and painters throughout the centuries have tried to portray the visual brilliance of a lightning cloud whilst modern technology has allowed us to capture the lightning forks on film. Now, there is also a sculptural representation of an electrical storm in the form of a ceiling lamp shaped like a cloud.

The Le Nuage pendant lamp is made from polyester wadding and each light is unique in shape and size. Appearance-wise they are identical to the look of clouds floating in the sky. In the evening, when lit, the lamps will appear as if they are part of a magnificent silent thunderstorm illuminating the room in a peaceful, calm and very beautiful manner. Rooms in the home which might benefit from such unique lighting include the main living room, the master bedroom or indeed any home library or studio where it will definitely provide a outstanding focal and talking point.

As well as the illusion of a storm cloud, the Le Nuage pendant lamp for the ceiling also hints at the beauty of sunshine battling its way through an overcast day. The lamp is the creation of Dutch designer Wout Wessemius. His Groningen-based studio is where he creates his masterpieces which include sculptures and objects for both the interior of a home and the exterior. He works with a variety of different materials including rubber, copper and lead to create such items as chairs, lanterns, sculptures and tables. Environmental factors are also considered in the making of this cloud-shaped pendant lamp by the fact the bulbs used are energy-efficient.

You can see more of his work here: Wout Wessemius Design.

Will you be entertaining lots of guests this Christmas? Do you want a feature in your home that will both surprise and entertain family members and children? If so, look no further than this fabulous life-sized Santa Claus which measures 6 foot tall when in a standing position. Incidentally, he can also be moved into a sitting position and be seated on any sofa, chair or bed in the house. He’s so realistic that visitors will do a double-take when first coming across the festive figure.

Santa Claus is an unmistakable character that is an essential part of the modern Christmas. Children adore him and adults have fond memories of his visits to their homes when they were kids themselves. Just the sight of Santa Claus in his distinctive red and white costume brings a smile of happiness and recognition to the majority of people. That’s why this life-size Santa Claus will make a wonderful decorative addition to a home which will be hosting some jolly festivities and family gatherings.

The 6-foot tall Santa comes with a display platform upon which his feet are attached. This allows the tall figure to be placed anywhere on flat ground whether on carpets, wooden floors, tiles or concrete. You can position the Santa in a standing position next to a doorway, table, Christmas tree, staircase or in the center of a room. Alternatively, he can be seated on a sofa, armchair, bed, bench or even at a piano. The possibilities are limitless. He will become a magnet for fun festive photo opportunities that will be remembered forever.

You can buy this Santa Claus figure here: Six Foot Life Sized Santa Claus.

Tired of the usual floor lamps you see in stores near where you live? Seeking something a little more contemporary, stylish, different … fabulously unique? These human figure floor lamps from the Italian furniture design company Bizzotto may well be an appealing prospect for your living room, dining room or even bedroom. They will add a decidedly human figure loving ambiance to the décor.

The life sized human figure floor lamps come in either a naked male form or a naked female form. There male form is in a seated position as though talking to a group of friends. In this regard, the lamp would ideally be placed next to a sofa, armchair or indoor bench where it can become part of the social arena of the home. The female form is standing in a contrapposto pose with her hands on her hips. This is very much a model pose frequently copied by young women wanting to appear sexy. As such, this lamp is deal for placement in a corner of an interior space or by a door.

Each of the floor lamps is headless and instead comes with a large lampshade matching the color of the body. Incidentally [editor’s note: when slightly miss-typing this word the spell checker offered up “indecently” as a possible correct spelling. Make of that what you will. ] , the floor lamp bodies are available in white, black and a variety of other colors. If you have a home needing some extra eclectic décor, these human figure floor lamps with shades for heads, will make a perfect addition.

In recent news it has been reported that current Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has become very much excited by the recent return to Iran of a 5000-year-old collection of jars, cups, bowls and vessels, from a London gallery. The ancient artefacts were allegedly stolen and smuggled out of the country before being tracked down. This interesting news story begs the question of how would the Iranian leader react to this Ahmadinejad tea pot by US design duo The Pitchfork Pals.

The ceramic and porcelain tea pot is one of a number of designs portraying famous people with largely negative reputations. These figures include the aforementioned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the mad war-mongering leader of Iran; Charles Manson, leader of a murderous gang; Kim Jong Il, the strange and evil leader of the secretive nuclear armed North Korea; and Aleister Crowley, widely considered the most influential occultist of all time. Strangely enough, the late Amy Winehouse has also been made into a decorative teapot to join this motely bunch.

Quite why anyone would want an Ahmadinejad teapot in their home is impossible to imagine but the fun weirdness of the project is hard to ignore. Krafft and Leavit’s designs are items that will sit well in a bohemian interior décor arrangement where different objects mix and merge with one another in outrageous displays of daring. Whether used to pour tea or not, the teapot will likely become of historical significance within a few years as Iran prepares to reach the nuclear threshold and various nations threaten to relieve it of its deadly ambitions.

Have a look at the entire collection here: Krafft and Leavitt Teapots.

Insects are not on everyone’s “wish to hold” list and this is understandable. However, sitting on an insect-shaped furniture piece, like the chairs shown in the images below, might well be too intriguing to avoid. The bug chairs are the creation of eccentric French designer Michel Haillard and are an eye-catching and irresistibly fascinating study of the strange and unexpected. His assembly of natural materials into visually striking furniture combines human imagination with the beauty of the natural world.

Haillard uses a variety of materials in his work including wood, bronze and silver. The most interesting items he incorporates into his furniture pieces though are wild animal skins such as those from crocodiles and ostriches, together with horns and tusks. The similarity between these natural materials and the shape and appearance of insects is clear to see. A beetle can easily be implied with the use of a rhino horn or elephant tusk. The antennae of many insects lend themselves well to inspired arching curves and chair legs. Haillard has combined these observations with the traditional design of African tribal thrones to create a gentle sense of nostalgia for pomp as well as for irony.

The French designer, who was once a cartoon artist, uses materials in a way that does not detract from their natural splendour whilst at the same time manipulating them to fit his imaginative creations. Placed in a domestic interior, the insect chairs would be impossible to ignore and would demand usage. In this sense, the work of Marcel Duchamp might well have been an inspiration.

You can read more about these chairs and their designer here: Michel Haillard Universe.

For a lot of people, this red balloon bench will immediately bring up images from the famous 1956 movie ‘The Red Balloon’ (Le ballon rouge). The story told of a little Parisian boy who made friends with a seemingly sentient balloon which followed him wherever he went. Albert Lamorisse’s film became one of the most well known movies from French cinema and inspired a more recent version Flight of the Red Balloon (2007) as well as countless stage performances. It’s therefore no surprise to find an item of contemporary furniture based on the tale like this red balloon bench by Japanese design team h220430.

The bench seems to be floating in mid-air by a collection of red balloons which if not for the ceiling would likely float up into the skies. In fact, the balloon bunches conceal four anchors which hold the bench in position as though truly floating. It’s not just some creative installation piece either and can actually be acquired via a Tokyo-based store called SOMEWHERE.

The Japanese design team h220430 is actually composed of two designers who are Satoshi Itasaka and Takuto Usami. The rather mundane looking name is actually based on the date of their foundation and they focus their efforts in lighting and furniture design. If you have money to spare, can afford international shipping costs and want something out of the ordinary to go in your contemporary living room or bedroom, then this red balloon bench is going to be highly appealing to you.

The façade of your home might be an area of the house you would like to spruce up a little bit. After all, it is where people first set eyes on your abode and from where they enter into the inner sanctuary. One family in Florida have taken the design of their home’s front section to a whole new level by fitting a mechanical system that lifts the entire façade into the air. Now why would someone do that? The answer is a family living in a converted aircraft hanger and who own a series of small aircraft including two gyroplanes and a powered parachute, plus their cars.

As one will see in the video below, the garage is huge and is composed of a workshop area, a social seating section and of course, storage space for spare parts and the aircraft themselves. The rest of the home can be accessed from around the side of the home and directly through the garage itself, which has been painted and decorated with personal accessories and images. For most people who don’t live in a former aircraft hanger, this type of wild garage door design would not be appropriate, possible or desirable but it does show what can be achieved with a little ingenuity and crazy thinking.

When the family come to sell the house, it is sure to attract the attention of aircraft enthusiasts who would rather store their small planes at home. The garden of the property is actually a runway and thus it is a dream home for those born with aviation in their hearts.

If you’ve ever been a student, then you’ll know this scene all too well. The build-up of dirty dishes overflows the top of the sink and keeps piling upwards and upwards. This amazing sculptural instillation by Zeger Reyers is called ‘Hard Water’ and features dining plates reaching three and half metres high and three metres across. It’s the stuff of nightmares for wives with large families but is sure to hit home with students, teens and those who like to regularly hold dinner parties.

Reyers is a Dutch designer and his ethos involves manipulating the environment in which he finds himself, in an artistic and visually interesting way. Nature is his greatest inspiration and combines this with the philosophy of using different interpretations of spaces to create new layers of reality. Amongst his other works was a rotating kitchen instillation which revolved continuously for a few months with a variety of everyday items still inside.

If you were to glance quickly enough and perhaps had left your glasses are home, you might be forgiven for thinking this white chair was perfectly normal. However, upon closer inspection you’ll notice that three of the legs have been completely cut through. It’s still a functioning chair though and this optical illusion is bound to cause a little jump of fascination in anyone’s mind. That’s precisely the aim behind this Cut Chair by Seattle-based Peter Bristol who is a lead designer at the product development consultancy Carbon Design Group.

The Cut Chair is perfectly stable and this is due to the strong cantilevered system out of sight. Below the thick carpet is a metal plate which holds the chair in place and allows people of all weights to sit on the seat without it collapsing. This will probably not stop someone from being extra careful when they first sit on the chair, which is perfectly understandable. The designer is seeking a partnership to move the chair towards production or display and in my view, it’s certainly worthy of being seen a lot more.
