Buon Fresco requires paint to be applied to a wet lime plaster base. As the lime carbonates and moisture evaporates, the pigment is entombed into a fine crystalline layer that develops on the surface of the wall. The effect is to as good as turn the lime plaster and accompanying pigment into stone, hence the incredibly long lasting quality of ancient frescos. Due to there being no modifying medium, the colors and clarity of the paint results in vivid images such as those on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

The technique of Buon Fresco has to be one of the hardest, if not the hardest, of painting systems that has ever been attempted. Wet colors dry lighter than when first applied and different pigments react in different ways. A skilled painter is also working against the clock in that the water has to be drawn out of the plaster to give extra fluidity to the brush strokes. The fresco might take a month or more to fully dry and so calculations of tonal results have to be kept in mind.

It’s not surprising this pub nativity wall mural is so good. Janet Shearer may be local to Cornwall, a county in the south west of England but she is well known worldwide for her artistic works in films, music albums and even in airports. She designed a backcloth for the rock band Pink Floyd’s The Wall album as well as creating murals for London Heathrow airport and the film Aliens.

The Blisland Inn nativity wall mural is a realistic interpretation of the 2,000 year old story of the birth of Christ. The baby Jesus is cradled lovingly in Mary’s arms whilst Joseph looks on beside her. Three wise men and a shepard also stand around the baby and bring gifts of homage. What has made the wall mural more personal and indeed remarkable is the fact that some of the locals faces have been used in the tableaux. For example, the landlord is Joseph whilst the chief barmaid is Mary. The three wise men and the shepherd are some of the pub’s most regular customers. At the bottom is a Jack Russell which is owned by Janet Shearer herself; a little bit of artistic licence.

The nativity scene in the Cornish pub was made using the trompe d’oeil technique which gives a wall mural a 3-D effect and can look extremely life-like. Charlie Kratzer, 53, the associate general counsel for Lexmark, started working on the project when he was faced with rather insipid cream walls that did little for the aesthetic ambience. Rather than coating the walls with white paint, he set about using his natural creativity to first improve a small section of the room, and later, with the artistic juices flowing, the rest.

“People are amazed that with something as simple and inexpensive as a Sharpie, you can decorate a whole basement.” says Kratzer. “You can do a lot with it.”

The main theme of the mural is a replica of his upstairs library with added notable figures from history. These include Sir Winston Churchill in conversation with George Bernard Shaw; fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes; the TV squirrel Rocky and his moose friend Bullwinkle; and also William Shakespeare. Poking their heads around a corner are the Marx Brothers whilst Joan Crawford rests in a chair.

At the doorway to the basement is a drawn image of the Impressionist artist Claude Monet, a figure of admiration for Kratzer who sees his own art work as a tribute to the great painter.

Pablo Picasso is another influence on the Kentucky lawyer, with one entire wall of the basement given over to a scene from a gathering at Picasso’s Paris salon in 1919. Also present on that wall are musical, cinematic and literary greats including Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Clive Bell and Olga Picasso.

Kratzer’s wife Deb is as equally enthusiastic saying, “I have the coolest husband. He’s so bright, and artistic on top of it.”
