The life sized human figure floor lamps come in either a naked male form or a naked female form. There male form is in a seated position as though talking to a group of friends. In this regard, the lamp would ideally be placed next to a sofa, armchair or indoor bench where it can become part of the social arena of the home. The female form is standing in a contrapposto pose with her hands on her hips. This is very much a model pose frequently copied by young women wanting to appear sexy. The Luminube basically consists of a conventional pillow with LED light strips fitted within. These light up and create a glow which infuses into the rest of the pillow and surrounding interior. The ambient lighting provided is good enough for a variety of activities such as reading or writing in bed. It can also be used as a purely decorative feature and turned off or moved when going to sleep. What’s more, the LED lights come with a smart-phone controlled timer and thus can be turned on and off at particular times of the day, for instance, in the morning, when they can act in the same way as an alarm clock.

In fact, waking up to a glowing pillow might well be a more relaxing and pleasurable way to gradually awaken each dawn, rather than the loud and sudden scream of a clock. There’s something to be said for the decorative effects the LED pillow will have during more intimate moments in bed such as during love making. What we know today as Halloween is actually the descendent of All Hallows Evening (All-Hallows-Even) which was an old British tradition that came directly before All Saints’ Day. Originally, instead of the pumpkin, a turnip was carved into a lantern as a way of remembering the souls held in purgatory. However, immigrants to North America found pumpkins in greater supply as well as being larger and therefore easier to carve. Halloween has also been influenced by literature and, more recently, by movies such as the classics of Frankenstein and Dracula.

Design duo Tristan Cochrane (British) and Paula Benvegnú (Argentinian) have likely also seen the swarms of jellyfish and used this wonder of nature as inspiration for their beautifully colourful jellyfish lamps. In fact, they mention the BBC’s documentary series ‘The Blue Planet’ as their route to this particular choice of animal and like me, enjoy watching the stunning variety of life found on the land and in the seas right around the world.

Each of the jellyfish lamps is made from ribbon (approximately 3-400 metres of the stuff) which conveys the slow, elegant and dreamlike movements of the Medusozoa. When the lamps are switched on in a dark room, the colourful jellyfish appear like ghosts from the blackness, just like they do in the darkness of the ocean as seen in natural documentaries. The light from the bulb streams down the yards of ribbons and catches in rich pockets of brightness.

The lamp is made from Corian, which is a material than can be formed in any shape imaginable when heated to a high temperature. The ghost-like delicate tentacles contribute to the appearance of floating through water and in the right lighting background, will add a magnificent ambiance to an interior setting.

The designer of the lamp, Markus Johansson, describes his work “as a glowing lamp in the darkness” where “unexpected experiences and surprises wait deep down on the ocean floor.”

When lit in a dark room, the octopus lamps will seem to bulge with desire to float away on invisible tides. A majestic beast lighting up the darkness of the deep as it sweeps along.

When visiting some old churches across Europe, you’ll often be told by guides and history books of engravings etched into the stonework of the walls. One old church I visited still had the engraved graffiti of the Crusaders before they set off for the Holy Land. Then of course you have the ancient caves in France where early man drew animals and hunting scenes. This graffiti table lamp is not as old, thank goodness but it is in its own way a testament to the human love of expression through art, design and imagery.
