You’ve probably heard of cow dung throwing contests by now but have you ever come across furniture made from cow shit before? This biodegradable and extremely eco-friendly solution to furniture making might not be to everyone’s liking especially if you’re mad about cleanliness. The Swedish designer with the aptly eye-catching name of Karin Auran Frankenstein is the mind behind the collection which was first aired back in 2008.

The philosophy behind the cow shit furniture collection was to make furniture and related home accessories that were cheap and whose materials were easy to come across. Dung is not the only material the Swedish artist used for she also created items made with other biodegradable materials such as chalk, flour, sand, straw, peat and clay, amongst other things. However, as one might expect, the cow dung furniture is what most caught people’s attention about the fascinating creations.

Karin Auran Frankenstein has designed a wide range of furniture pieces including chairs, tables, shelving and smaller items such as lighting fixtures and clocks. When looking through the pictures of her work you might well be reminded of art and design works by the likes of Salvador Dali and Antonio Gaudi.

All too often, the bathroom interior can take on a rather industrial and cold appearance. That’s why a little color and even humor rarely goes amiss when looking for decorative and functional accessories to go with your bathroom decor. This octopus hanging shower caddy by Formverket is just such an example of what I mean and fulfils two roles in one.

Shower caddies in general tend to be dull and often rather ugly once soap stains or rust have their way with them. The solution is this amusing octopus made from natural latex which is known for having fantastic grip. Instead of reaching, half blind, for the shampoo or shower gel bottles somewhere below your knees, you can instead simply grab the container you require, squeeze and let go, quickly and easily. The octopus caddy even stores the bottles upside down so when nearly empty, the shampoo or gel will be ready to come out.

The eight-armed octopus shower caddy is the creation of the Swedish design company Formverket, trademark of Jens Widerberg, which combines simplicity and functionality so inherent in Scandinavian design.

You can buy one here: Shower Caddy Octopus.

Also available in black, green and blue.

As an artist myself, I’ve always been attracted to home art studio interior design. That’s why I want to share these pictures I found from a Swedish design magazine. They show the loft studio of artist Carouschka Streijffert who lives and works in the Swedish capital city of Stockholm. Her work involves sculpture and this is also translated into her choice of interior architecture.

Most of the rooms in this large top floor apartment feature sculptural shapes, forms and additions such as staircases and contemporary fireplaces. Wall windows are seen on nearly every wall which gives the artist a bird’s eye view of the city, by day and by night. What wonderful inspiration!

The home library is built into what was once the main staircase of the apartment. Curved steps lead from the kitchen to this small oasis of calm and learning. In the center is an iconic chair by the famous furniture designer Le Corbusier.

The building dates back to the 19th Century and Streijffert has cleverly left hints of this in the designs found in the kitchen. Notice the fittings built out of solid birch with iron handles on cupboards and drawers. Carrara marble adorns the surfaces. Aged industrial lights add character to the wall.

The picture above is the opposite view to the second image of the small home library. It looks into the kitchen space with a wonderfully flowing simplicity. The way the different areas meet with one another reminds me of a river where water flows from one place to the next, with rapid excitement and freedom. The circular window compliments the round steps, both in form and in the amount of natural light it lets in.

This spiral staircase is an eye-catching feature. it’s made from water cut steel and leads from the living room and kitchen area up to the bathroom and bedroom. One the wall next to the spiral staircase are two circular ship windows. The feeling of being aboard a cruise liners is further highlighted by the South African ticket rug to the left.

I love this loft bathroom. As you can see it’s positioned in the roof space and the interior architecture of the room makes the ambiance even richer. A large white Corian bathtub can be seen in the center of the bathroom. Storage for clothing and towels is provided in the form of beautiful African baskets which are placed against the wall.

In the living area, a central fireplace is present complete with a large chimney flue. Step shapes form part of the fireplace design which mimic the surrounding staircases and angled walls. Another Le Corbusier chair can be seen on the left. On the far wall is a wide screen television which cleverly is almost camouflaged in its form.

Vaulted studio windows add a splendid and impressive element to the main studio and working area. Natural daylight is in plentiful supply. Steel beams curve impressively from the floor to the top of the arched ceiling. The tall wall to the left gives plenty of room for hanging art work and sculptures.

You can see more interiors where these came from by visiting: Sköna hem. (It’s all in Swedish however but plenty of pictures)

Indoor heaters are usually mundane and ugly electric contraptions that do little to enhance a home interior. They are great for adding some localised heat to a room but it’s often a case of hiding it away when guests come visiting. That’s why this wonderfully attractive Piet indoor stove caught my eye recently. Its designed by Swedish designer Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius and focuses on both high functionality and aesthetic quality.

As indoor heaters go, the Piet indoor stove beats any I’ve seen before, at least in look. The stove has a brass reflector and burns not wood but ethanol fuel. This means there is no soot or smoke thereby eliminating the need for ventilation in the form of a chimney. Owing to rock wool fire insulation between the brass reflector and the white ceramic shell, the Piet stove can be placed next to walls or furniture.

As one can see from the pictures, the Piet stove is small enough to be like a portable indoor heater, in that it can be moved from room to room without much difficulty. Its attractive elliptic shape means it can be placed in a wide variety of interiors such and will compliment many different styles of decor.

H/T: Home Tone.

The Mr Twister Lamp is an interesting concept designed by Swedish design firm Cate & Nelson. The lampshade is made of three independent parts that can be swivelled around allowing various increments of light to escape.

When closed, in a regular lampshade shape, small narrow openings allow chinks of light to shine through. If more light is needed in a certain position or area of the room, then with a slight rotation, extra light is exposed.

Cate & Nelson’s Mr Twister Lamp will be ideal for futuristic interiors and student-based lodgings but I’m unsure as to its appeal outside a set niche.
