Elephants are the largest living land animals in existence today. In many Asian cultures, the beast is seen as a symbol of wisdom whilst in scientific terms, they are thought of as one of the most intelligent animals on a par with that of dolphins and primates. The elephant is a highly distinctive creature and for this reason it is widely seen in various cultural depictions around the world. In Hinduism, the god of wisdom is seen as having the head of an elephant whilst in Alexander the Great’s Seleucid Empire, elephants were a symbol of imperial power.

The Bastet was a feline goddess from ancient Egypt and was worshipped up until the end of the Second Dynasty (2686 BC). Egyptologists have discovered that Bastet was originally portrayed as either a fierce lioness or a woman with the head of a lion. During this period she was considered the protector goddess of Lower Egypt and defender of the pharaoh. Gradually, over time, her standing slipped due to competition from other feline goddesses and she morphed into a cat-goddess. Sometimes she was represented as a woman with the head of a cat but most of the time, simply as a cat.

The Ancient Egyptians loved cats and revered them as special creatures. This was in no small part due to their rat and snake catching abilities which frequently saved food supplies and often kept away disease. Some royal families even dressed their cats with jewellery and allowed them to eat from the same plate as they did. A few modern-day cat owners will undoubtedly be sympathetic to such actions. Hundreds of thousands of mummified cats have been found in tombs across Egypt.

The Samurai were a military nobility class of pre-industrial Japan. Their belief that the way of the warrior was the most honourable course forged their path and destiny, and indeed that of Japan as a whole. Nowadays, the classical Samurai is iconic and famous across the world. Numerous movies (my personal favourite being “Shichinin no Samurai” made in 1954) and art works have portrayed a romanticised image of the noble warriors and their ethical code (Bushido) together with their weaponry (most notably the sword) and body armour.

The beginnings of the Samurai can be found in early poems from the 10th Century. The end of the Samurai class came to a final conclusion upon the drafting of new laws soon after World War 2. Even though the Samurai way of life is now extinct, the intense interest in the history, culture and artefacts related to this old warrior class has not diminished. In the Western World especially, decorative objects, sculptures and art works portraying the Samurai way of life are very popular. This stoic looking Japanese Samurai who is holding two swords, perhaps readying himself for combat, is perfect for someone with a fascination for this era in Japanese history. The abstract figurine consists of two main sections both joined together by a pair of arms. The top section depicts the thinking man’s head, chest and shoulders whilst the lower section is comprised of his crossed legs. The day dreaming figurine is made from Suar wood which is a type of hardwood native to a rainforest tree in South America. In the last century, the tree species was spread across the tropical regions of the world and is now found in Indonesia as well. Suar wood is a very eco-friendly wood for it is fast growing and easily replaceable. Its popularity as a material for sculpture can be found in the fact that the wood varies dramatically in color from the centre of the tree to the outer rings. Its interlocking grain also makes it a strong wood and less liable to crack in drier regions of the world such as North America.

Each of the Jazz player statues is made from metal, with the musicians themselves being finished in a slate grey color. King Solomon brought many of the birds to Israel and they were known as treasures. For many years I’ve held a fascination with Buddhism and its related teachings and aesthetics. In my home there are up to half a dozen Buddha statues and figurines of varying designs, materials and sizes. Some are made from porcelain whilst others are made from stone and wood. The wooden Buddha statues are some of my favorite precisely because of the oneness with nature they bring to an interior.
