The resulting horror that ignites when you discover your prized leather sofa has a scratch or hole in it can be overwhelming. All that money saved up and spent on the sofa has now gone down the drain? Right? … Wrong! Relax, sit down and read through this article to discover the various ways you can repair damage to any type of leather furniture you have in your home.

First of all, inspect carefully the damage caused and evaluate how it came about and what type of breakage it is. If you have pets, especially cats, then furniture is always going to be in danger of getting scratched and ripped. For households with children then scuffs, scrapes and spillages are likely going to be a relatively frequent concern.

Luckily, over 90% of leather furniture can be repaired at home. Check whether the damaged furniture item is made from protected or top coated leather. If so, you are in luck. You’ll be able to distinguish this fact from the uniform color and appearance of the leather. For the rarer non-protected leather furniture, you’ll need to find the services of an expert restorer.

Leather repair kits can be purchased from most hardware stores and online shopping websites. Detailed instructions will make the repair job simple and straightforward and as long as the damage is not large and extensive, you’ll find that the sofa, armchair or footrest will be looking as good as new in no time at all. Make sure to act as soon as a cut or hole appears otherwise it will get worse very quickly and likely lead to an unfixable situation.

Most kits will involve a chemical compound which fills the tear or hole and secures the edges together. This will work also for scuff marks, scratches, wear spots, cigarette burns and cracking. In the case of puncture holes, a spare piece of leather will likely be needed. The smaller the damage, the quicker and easier the repair job will be and once you have repair once injury to the leather, you’ll find yourself more skilled at repairing damage in the future.

It’s very important to make sure the affected area is clean before repairs are made. Think of it in the same way you would clean the area around a human wound before applying anti-septic cream and bandages. Be careful to use only soft soaps and avoid harsh chemicals which will cause more damage to the surface of the leather. After the repair job is completed, it is wise to condition the leather with a special conditioning cream. This keeps the leather shining and supple. This should be done every six months.

So you see, you don’t have to panic and start preparing to throw your expensive sofa out onto the street for the vagrants to use. Most leather furniture can overcome minor to moderate damage from cat claws, cigarette burns, spillages, scrapes, punctures and blemishes.

Doing your part for the environment should start at home. The next time you are remodeling your home remember that it is easy to incorporate some eco-friendly ideas into the new plans. Using green materials will cut down on harmful pollutants and many are less costly and more durable than their armful counterparts. Read on to find a few examples to help save your environment and improve your living space and conditions at the same time.

1. When replacing doorknobs, framing and moldings you can use salvage materials. There are a lot of vintage looks that add character to the rooms they inhabit. Buying vintage is a way to not only recycle but save cash as well. You can buy vintage pieces that rang from cabinets to toilet fixtures.

2. Add a few solar panels when you are replacing that tired old roof. These can be installed as a part of the roof design and hooked up to provide an alternative source of energy for the home. Another solar product is the solar shingle you can install these alongside the other shingles and make a statement in your neighborhood.

3. Replace the lighting with energy-smart bulbs. If you are installing new fixtures go the extra step and use the light bulbs that cut down on the high waste of energy to brighten the home. A 26watt compact fluorescent light bulb has the candle strength of a 100watt bulb for. They cost a bit more in the beginning but at the end of the year the overall electricity savings is well worth it.

You do not have to let your efforts stop with these three there are hundreds of little ways to make small improvements in your home that will save energy for the future. Buying products in recyclable cans and bottles. Using the wasted food materials in your home to start a composite. A word of warning that family member that came to visit at Thanksgiving and haven’t left yet should not be a part of the compost. Feeloaders make bad fertilizer. Insulate around door and window openings, this will help you to avoid loss of energy. Heating and cooling units work twice as hard when the efforts are being lost to the out of doors.

As you can see there is a lot one person can do. The road to a better tomorrow is paved by the work of each individual. You can do your part.

One of the most important tasks facing you over the next few weeks will be the act of winterizing your home interior. This will probably mean just a few touching up jobs here and there if you take good and regular care of your house or apartment, year in and year out. If on the other hand, you have recently moved into a new residence which has been neglected, then the task of preparing the home for winter might be quite extensive and expensive. The following areas will need to be explored and evaluated.

The cheaper and easiest locations in the home to check and fix usually involve the following. Central heating vents need to be cleared which can be done with a simple duster or vacuum cleaner. Air filters of any kind should be replaced annually so it’s important to keep tabs on when there were last changed, especially if someone in the family suffers from breathing difficulties.

Windows and exterior doors should be checked for drafts. This can be as simple as placing your hand over and around the possible areas where gaps might appear. One of my favorite ways to check for tiny drafts is to hold an opened paper tissue near any suspect areas. If a draft is found, then install weather-stripping to the base and sides of exterior doors. For windows, caulk around the panes to seal them from the outside air.

Another place to inspect when winterizing the home is wherever the water heaters are located. These are usually found in the basement. In order to make the water heaters more efficient, one can wrap extra insulation around the apparatus. This will not only increase its efficiency but also protect it from temperature related cracks and reduce overall energy costs.

More expensive and work intensive options for winterizing a home include the following. Fitting insulation in your attic or roof space can prevent a lot of heat escaping during the winter months. This is due to the fact that hot air rises and so without any insulation, the heat will escape and the result will be a cooler house and also a lot of expensive extra heating. Good high rated insulation will be reasonably expensive but will last many years and cut costs in other areas.

One of the appliances I have written about before on this blog is the warm mist humidifier. These will increase the quality of air in the home when all windows, doors and other vents are closed. This is especially important for family members who suffer from allergies and asthma. It also acts in reducing the likelihood of catching colds and flu.

Depending on where in the world you live, a Winter can mean a lot more rain and snowfall than usual. This can lead to flooding. Most homes will have a basement of some kind and so it is vital to purchase a pump, or in particular, a sump pump. This will prevent your home being flooded during heavy precipitation periods. In fact, in some locations, this should be a piece of equipment you have working all year round. Like with the pump, if you live in a place which regularly suffers from high winds and hurricanes, one should look into installing storm windows. These will prevent damage and also provide special insulation.

Finally, if you leave your home during the colder months for more than a week or two, one might think insulation is not a concern. Well, no. Your furniture and indoor pipes will still suffer from the extreme cold. Wood and similar materials can split in very cold conditions, as can thin metal piping and structures. This can leave you returning to a flooded home or a dangerously cracked chair which could later lead to an unpleasant accident.

The best option for winterizing a vacant home is to install a thermostat, if you don’t have one already. Pipes and all interior furnishings will be kept safe as long as the temperature is maintained around 40° F (4° C). The thermostat usually has a low setting of 50° F (10° C) which is more than adequate. Doing this will insure less damage and also a more cosy interior space when you return.

The last thing you need to check if leaving the residence for some period of time is that the main water source in your home is turned off and that every pipe, drain and faucet is drained of water. If not, when the temperature plummets below freezing, water will expand and lead to widespread and expensive damage.

This all might seem a lot of work and in some cases, may seem pointless or something that can be left until a later date. However, in order to save money, prevent costly damage and keep you and your family in the best of health and comfort, it’s important to fully winterize your home interior.
