However, this takes the concept one step further and turns those paper lamps into a gigantic interior structure which acts much like a sanctuary, reading room, or meditation space. The inspiration for the design came from Seung-Yong Song’s childhood when he would seek secret places to hide when things got a little too scary or busy. The small space provided a deeper sense of protection from imaginary enemies rather than the less secretive wider spaces of a standard room in the home. I believe this is a concept we can all find understanding of.

The large paper globe can be pulled up and down on a special sliding mechanism. A light is also attached to the standard-looking chair thus providing a wonderfully peaceful place to sit and read, write, or just think. Its size means it would look out of place in smaller rooms but in large open-plan interiors, the Object-O chair would fit nicely. It’s a room within a room and can be labelled with a multitude of philosophical and psychological meanings. Incidentally, the shade is made from Korean paper and looks pretty stunning when illuminated by the lamp. When all over lights in the house are turned off, the lit globe will look very beautiful in the darkness.

Furniture designed to look as natural as possible are increasingly popular nowadays and there are a variety of design studios creating tables, beds, shelving and chairs that mimic trees, bushes and roots. This particular chair is made by Dutch designer Floris Wubben and includes part of a tree trunk and branches from a Willow Tree. The lower section was formed by binding and splinting the branches of a willow tree, forcing them to grow into four legs. Therefore, the tree has actually been inverted, hence the name.

Studio Floris Wubben specialises in creating furniture that combines natural forms with traditional designs. Human action in the design process is kept to a minimum and nature is given the primary focus. A natural item, such as a branch or tree trunk is thus formed into a furniture piece or utensil, without losing its natural appeal.

The Cut Chair is perfectly stable and this is due to the strong cantilevered system out of sight. Below the thick carpet is a metal plate which holds the chair in place and allows people of all weights to sit on the seat without it collapsing. This will probably not stop someone from being extra careful when they first sit on the chair, which is perfectly understandable. The designer is seeking a partnership to move the chair towards production or display and in my view, it’s certainly worthy of being seen a lot more.

The swivel function allowed extra comfort and dynamicism which had rarely been seen in chairs before and heightened the parallels between the seat and developments in technology and space-travel which were in their infancy during the period of the chair’s design. The upper part of the Tulip Chair is relatively simple and is comprised of a streamlined curved fiberglass body with a padded seat cushion. Over the years, various different color combinations have been created.

Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910 and emigrated to America with his family when a young boy. After studying sculpture and furniture design, he went on to work as an architect as well as an illustrator during the war years. It’s fascinating to note, that his Tulip Chair would later become internationally recognised as the seating pieces on the original Star Trek set. The famous furniture company Knoll made the chairs themselves.

The KAIRO chair as seen in the picture is made from a solid piece of cedar wood which has been carved into what can be described as an armchair. This is due to the curving effect and double arc feature of the seat which allows the sitter to rest their arms on the edges when in a sitting position. The inspiration for this chair is said to have come from his land of birth, Egypt and the ancient Egyptian boat designs and hieroglyphs.

Rashid’s desire in making this KAIRO chair, named after the place where he was born, was to create “a piece of furniture from a simple block of wood, with the ‘objective of removing the least quantity of wood possible from the trunk”. The widely respected guest lecturer and part-time DJ, certainly knows how to work creatively with natural forms and to make impressive and beautiful furniture pieces without taking away the very essence of the material used.

Charles and Ray Eames always desired in the materials they used a type of honesty and honestly and unselfconscious which would not detract from the shape of the furniture piece itself. This particular chair Eames fiberglass chair with wire base is formed so as to provide a highly comfortable shell in which to sit. Movement of the body is not restricted by arm rests and thus the sear is perfect as a dining room chair which can be part of a larger collection. Most chairs of this style are relatively simple in look and are imbued with neutral colors. In many cases they attempt to mimic more classical and complicated styles of furniture but hold back on the detailed and ornate features in order to be able to quietly blend in with their surroundings. Indeed, being rather inconspicuous is the nature of an occasional chair but with just enough looks not to become visually obtrusive.

The alternative to this type of furniture piece is something like a folding chair or a stool. However these are not as comfortable for visitors to sit on nor are they likely to merge into the existing décor of a room. Whilst occasional chairs might not be of the same style as much of the furniture in the room, they will be neutral enough to fit in nicely without any noticeable difference.

Having won the 2003 Materiaalfonds Prize, this Random Chair is already known as a cut above the rest. In its style, it is reminiscent of a child’s design project involving soggy newspapers wrapped about a soon-to-be-burst balloon. In fact, this is precisely what inspired Bertjan Pot in the first place. However, in this instance, the chair is created using epoxy-dipped carbon fiber which was formed over a single-sided mould. The result is a hollow structure which is not only extremely light but also very strong and thoroughly capable of holding the weight of a human.

The Random Chair is a modern furniture piece ideal for a contemporary room. Bertjan Pot’s delicate yet sturdy chair is both a sculpture and a functioning seat and should be considered as so when deciding on its placement. Light will play an important part as well for the structure and materials used in the creation of the Random Chair are conducive to the display and shadowing of the lights and the general interior.

For example, one can imagine this chair placed beside a contemporary floor lamp in a minimalist themed living room or bedroom. The light will enter into the chair’s body and draw shadows on the floor and nearby walls. With a myriad of flickering candles, the effect will be magical and will hark back to the mysteries of the Middle Ages and beyond. The possibilities are endless.

Now you may be wondering whether this Oliana rattan swivel chair could also be called a wicker chair. The fact is there is no material in the would which is called wicker and the word in fact describes the process of weaving. Rattan on the other hand is a material and is a very similar to the tropical palm tree. Indeed, rattan is considered one of the strongest woods on earth which makes it an ideal material for furniture such as this Oliana rattan swivel chair. It also looks good too.

The round and circular Oliana rattan swivel chair seen above is a more relaxed form of the home office swivel chair types which I have written about before on this blog.
