Insects are not on everyone’s “wish to hold” list and this is understandable. However, sitting on an insect-shaped furniture piece, like the chairs shown in the images below, might well be too intriguing to avoid. The bug chairs are the creation of eccentric French designer Michel Haillard and are an eye-catching and irresistibly fascinating study of the strange and unexpected. His assembly of natural materials into visually striking furniture combines human imagination with the beauty of the natural world.

Haillard uses a variety of materials in his work including wood, bronze and silver. The most interesting items he incorporates into his furniture pieces though are wild animal skins such as those from crocodiles and ostriches, together with horns and tusks. The similarity between these natural materials and the shape and appearance of insects is clear to see. A beetle can easily be implied with the use of a rhino horn or elephant tusk. The antennae of many insects lend themselves well to inspired arching curves and chair legs. Haillard has combined these observations with the traditional design of African tribal thrones to create a gentle sense of nostalgia for pomp as well as for irony.

The French designer, who was once a cartoon artist, uses materials in a way that does not detract from their natural splendour whilst at the same time manipulating them to fit his imaginative creations. Placed in a domestic interior, the insect chairs would be impossible to ignore and would demand usage. In this sense, the work of Marcel Duchamp might well have been an inspiration.

You can read more about these chairs and their designer here: Michel Haillard Universe.

A bug catcher vacuum is a simple device that allows home-owners to safely and humanely capture bugs and put them outside. This is important for people who have a particular fear of spiders and don’t want these insects in the home interior. A bug catcher vacuum is also toxin-free which means it is safe to use in any interior environment and avoids the necessity to use bug sprays and powders which can be very unpleasant. As well as this, a bug catcher vacuum is safe for the whole family, including children, to use.

The bug catcher vacuum works by sucking insects into a compartment thereby trapping them for safe removal from the scene. Thankfully, for people like myself who hate to kill animals and bugs of any kind, the insect is unharmed and can be freed outside. There are however versions that do kill the insect and these can be purchased as well, depending on your preference. Bug catcher vacuums can be used for both flying and ground-based bugs such as spiders, millipedes and caterpillars.

It’s not just for bug removal that a bug catcher vacuum can be used. They are also extremely beneficial for children and parents who want to study insects in a scientific manner. Special toy bug vacuums are available which allow children to view and examine the bugs, up close, without causing harm to the insect.

Bug catcher vacuums come in different formats. Some are battery powered whilst others use trigger-based suction and air compression methods. One of the most popular humane bug catcher vacuums is the BugZooka model which is battery-free and uses bellows to compress air which sucks in the insect. The bugs are kept in a transparent tube which means children and inquisitive adults can inspect the insect they have caught. The tube is removable for easy transport outside where the bug in question can be safely freed.

You can read other people’s bug vacuum reviews of the BugZooka here: BugZooka Humane Bug Catcher (Wasps, Spiders & Flies)

If you have a fear of bugs that creepy crawl over your toes when you’re not expecting it or annoyingly buzz around your ears when you’re trying to work, then a bug catcher vacuum will come in very useful.

The Flemish multidisciplinary artist Jan Fabre is no stranger to controversial designs. In 1990 he covered an entire building with drawings made by a ballpoint pen. One of his most recent designs however is a striking interior feature found in the Royal Palace in Brussels, Belgium. The ceiling of the main hall is comprised of 1.6 million Jewel Beetles (Buprestidae) individually glued on by an army of workers.

When first entering the interior of the Brussels Royal Palace, it can be difficult to know what exactly the glowing green ceiling is made of. Many visitors offer their best guesses which range from silkworm yarn, wool, gem stones and painted shells. The ceiling itself rests above the intricately decorated and luxurious interior filled with ornate and classical art and designs.

The ‘Heaven Of Delight’ as the jewel beetle adorned ceiling is called, took four months to complete. The reason for choosing this particular bug was because of the jewel beetle’s unique shine and deep green hue. For an artist who has previously worked with various bodily fluids, the insect was a perfect choice as a rather macabre element to a modernist ceiling design.

The exquisite setting means the visitor will possibly assume that the ceiling is made from some precious rocks or gems. Upon close inspection they will see textile-like patterns in a layered format. Suddenly, they will be told what the ceiling is actually made from which has no doubt provided some squeals of amazement and even horror.

You can see more of this artist’s work on his website found here: The website of Jan Fabre.
