If you’re looking to add a burst of color to a wall then this decoupage smiling moon wall clock might just be the answer. All too often, wall clocks come in the regular white, cream or even black colorings and provide little in the way of tonal value to an interior. However, this cheerfully colorful clock is the opposite and contains beautiful shades of green, yellow, blue, red and gold.

An array of patterns add further interest not usually seen on a traditional clock face. The design is in fact a reproduction of a painting made from acrylics which has been decoupaged onto the surface of the vinyl polymer structure. Small red glass gems provide a splendid touch to each of the four corners of this square shaped smiling moon wall clock. It is in so many ways a visual treat for the eyes.

The clock is American made, having been hand-crafted in the state of Georgia. For an interior which needs a little (make that a lot) of extra funkiness, this colorful wall clock will be just the ticket. This is especially true if you like art, color, vibrancy and warm Summer evenings sipping wine beneath the stars.

Price: $29.99

If you’re wanting to add some modern art to your bathroom interior, you might like to think about making your own toilet roll tube gargoyle sculptures. French artist Junior Fritz Jacquet has done precisely that and three of his impressive creations can be seen below. The self-described ‘creator and sculptor in paper’ mounts these toilet roll tube faces onto steel stands where they are snapped up by an eager art buying public.

The Parisian artist was first inspired to make these toilet roll gargoyles after sitting in school origami classes as a child. Card, in his eyes, has endless potential as a creative medium and he has now made over 40 unique toilet roll tube faces. He cites his inspiration in the art world as being from, amongst others, Swiss surrealist sculptor Giacometti and Senegalese artist Ousmane Sow, who worked in bronze and clay respectively.

It’s not just toilet roll tube gargoyles that Junior Fritz Jacquet makes but also card figurines and illuminated paper sculptures. He says of paper: “Paper is surprising in its fragility but also complex in its texture, elasticity, capacity to absorb light and its memory of being folded or crumpled. … I treat paper like a living material. It has a memory in that it holds or forgets folds or the pressure of a finger.”

These toilet roll tube faces sell at 60 euros each.

I recently came across the endearing website of artist and sculptor Rachel Denny. Her work involves creating sculptures of various animals in a variety of different mediums including wood, clay and fabrics. She is an American artist who lives in Portland, in the state of Oregon. Below are just three of the multitude of pieces she has designed and I fully recommend visiting her website to view the rest.

This ewe sculpture is made from shredded sweaters amongst other things.

The Blue Fleck Doe is one of her more recent creations and reminds me a lot of the wooden abstract trophy heads I wrote about a few weeks ago.

This wonderful little sculpture is named “weight” and is composed of cast lead bird perched upon a found rear view mirror.

Wander over to the website of Rachel Denny where you can peruse the various other sculptures she has made.

I’m always partial to recycled home products and designs. A good looking handmade item that has been made from something else no longer required is even better. This is where these wonderful handmade coasters come into view which have been made from recycled magazines. You can see the results in the image below.

Jessica Jones of the blog “How About Orange…” is a keen artist and graphic designer who has made a blog post about her creations. Her latest “after-dinner-while-watching-TV project” was to weave these delightful handmade coasters for cups and mugs from a total of six magazine pages.

If you want to have a go and make some recycled coasters then my advice is to follow the detailed instructions on her blog post which can be found here: Recycled Magazine Coasters

Each instruction point comes with a picture for easy following. From the looks of things, you won’t even need glue, just a pair of scissors. Go on over and have a look.

If you like to sit down and unknot a problem, then this seat might be what you’re looking for. Each of these contemporary knot seats are made from a combination of foam and wool. Not surprisingly, the inspiration behind these unique designs comes from the form of a traditional sailor’s knot.

Some of the knots are full sized seats, the others are smaller cushions which can also be used with other items of seating furniture. The designers of these inspiring pieces are Belgium duo Emilie Lecouturier and Céline Poncelet. In 2006, the product and interior designers created their own company called Atelier BLINK. Their basic ethos is to create the unexpected in what we usually consider to be familiar objects.

The simple kitchen frying pan is a rather mundane item. Some look good or as stylish as a frying pan can ever be. We couldn’t live without them however and they do their job perfectly. They know their place too and that is in the kitchen, on the stove, or stored away in a cupboard. Some get to hang on the pantry or kitchen walls, if they’re lucky. Never in their wildest and most sizzling of dreams would they imagine a humble frying pan becoming part of a chicken.

That’s exactly what the Fried Chicken Sculpture is. This 20 inch high expressive chicken is made from various recycled metals including a frying pan. Although designed to stand in a garden, yard or patio, it can also be a great addition to a home interior. If you have a country kitchen, a rustic library room, a bohemian bedroom or such like, then this chirpy chicken is going to be mighty happy to be a decorative art fixture in one of the corners.

I think it looks great! The metal Fried Chicken Sculpture is sure to brighten up any room or yard it’s placed in. Just don’t put it in the hallway, you don’t want old Aunt Sally having a heart attack.

It costs just $89.99 and can be purchased from here: Fried Chicken Recycled Metal Sculpture

The work of photographer Tim Walker has long been flamboyant and expressive. Having won numerous awards during his life time, he currently takes photographs for Vanity Fair and Vogue magazine. What is particular fascinating about Tim Walker’s photography is the amazing and often outlandish stage sets he creates on which to base the fashion shoots. Whilst clothing fashion and interior decoration are somewhat related, one doesn’t usually see the two combined.

The images presented below showcase some of the Vogue magazine installations created by the photographer Tim Walker which I feel will also provide inspiration for home interior design. One might guffaw at the notion of somehow incorporating these Alice in Wonderland styles into the ordinary apartment or house, and that would be understandable. However, inspiration can strike from even the most bizarre and surreal scenes we come across in life.

Obviously, unless one has a lot of money, many large rooms and a rather decadent lifestyle, we will not be recreating these fantastical interiors to the very last detail. We can on the other hand, take small parts of Tim Walker’s photographic Vogue instillations and include them into part of our living room or bathroom interior decor. I’ll give some examples along with each of the images.

I’ve covered Alice in Wonderland styles on this blog before. Vogue photographer Tim Walker has told in interviews of his love for the stories by C.S Lewis and Lewis Carroll during his childhood years. His work is very obviously influenced by these tales. The image here shows a giant watering can surrounded by colorful butterflies. In the ordinary home interior, little décor accessories which add color to what can be a drab room will likely lead to an increase in the space’s character.

A British spitfire flies into this interior which is decorated with cloud wallpaper and retro pictures and photographs from the 1940′s period. Whether Tim Walker was influenced by the popular “Biggles” series is not quite certain, but probable. Notice how the sofa cover imitates the blue and white of the wallpaper and almost seems to merge into the sky effect. This clever décor coordination can be used in your ordinary home interior design.

As I mentioned at the beginning, clothing fashions and interior decoration are related in many ways. I don’t think this can be highlighted any better than the scene in the above image. Photographer Tim Walker has placed lights inside the frameworks of women’s dresses creating an absolutely stunning outdoor lighting effect. The beauty of the tree and dark sky becomes the perfect backdrop to the eye-catching display.

In previous entries on this blog I have shown some amazing lighting structures such as these sea inspired light sculptures and decorative paper lampshades. The above image, whilst not an inside shot, can nevertheless be taken as inspiration for a residential interior space. With a little imagination, it’s very possible to create decorative lampshades from old pieces of material and wire framework. Do you have a few spare coat hangers and a couple of lighting adaptors? Why not have a go at making a “dress light”? It would make your friends burst with envy and shock.

Walls don’t always have to be flat surfaces. When I was studying at Art College I took a particular delight in designing walls that held a surrealist element to them, such as an everyday item being half in the wall and half out. You can see an example of what I mean in this photo by Tim Walker which shows in the bottom right-hand corner a flower pot merging into the wall. Surrealism plays a large part in the photography sets of Tim Walker, which is reminiscent of the works by such artists as Rene Margritte and Salvidor Dali.

A cheaper alternative to changing the structure of your walls is to use fabrics and shelving which can be colored in the same tones or paint which have been used to decorate your interior landscape.

I bet this image will remind many readers who have teenage daughters of their offspring’s messy and tumultuous bedroom. A brook or stream runs through the center between rocks and the foundations of trees. Obviously having a river flowing through your bedroom or living room is out of the question, unfortunately but you can take some inspiration from this photo.

Plants and flowers always add a breath of fresh air to a home interior. There are many creative ways you can incorporate nature into a room, for example this geometric polygon flower planter and raku bottle-neck vase. Natural looking sculptural stones and wall posters can also increase the feel of the wild.

As Mark Twain said: “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society”. Perhaps, but Spanish artist David Blázquez has decided to test whether the nude can make the furniture. The results have certainly been influential amongst gallery fans where the photos of the naked artist posing as chairs, tables and bookshelves have been on exhibition in the El Fotómata showroom in Seville, Spain.

The images pose many philosophical questions. How often have you wondered whether an item of furniture or other inanimate object can think and feel emotions? Is the bookcase in the alcove bored of standing there day after day after day? I must admit these thoughts have often crossed my mind, naturally followed by a “don’t be a silly ass” moment.

How much are we a part of out home interior decoration? Can we be considered a piece of furniture if we sit in one position long enough and have the cat resting on our lap? These photographs ignite the endless round of existentilist pondering that can drive a man crazy but they are indeed fascinating.

The more colourful the item, the more a child will like it. This has proven to be the case with the cubist wall clock shown in the picture below. It is comprised of thirteen blocks, twelve of which are an assortment of various colours including yellow, pink, aqua, red, orange, green, light blue, royal blue, white and black. A silver block connects the clock hands and is where the timing piece is located. The best thing about it is that the child can assemble the blocks in any format he or she likes.

Simple adhesives lead to easy application to most types of wall surface leaving it an ideal room accessory for those seeking to spruce up an overly white room or bring excitement to a child’s bedroom. “The blocks clock rocks!” as one reviewer aptly put it. A simple idea which brings out the creative spark in both children and adults.

Building blocks have been part of children’s lives for centuries and all of us can lay claim to having once tried to build the Empire State Building. In my case at least, it ended up as the Leaning Tower of Pisa when only six blocks high. The Dutch product designer Pepe Heykoop has taken the art of the child’s building blocks to a new level with his intriguing Brickchair.

The Brickchair was inspired by a drawing made by the Australian illustrator James Gulliver Hancock. From there, through a series of drawings, the chair evolved and was finally to be constructed out of square wooden blocks. Thankfully the seat itself is covered with a layer of foam to avoid unfortunate accidents.

Not content with the chair, Heykoop went on to make the Brickchandelier which is made up of just over 1000 children’s building blocks. Dutch toy stores must be doing a roaring trade.
