One of the most amazing archaeological finds of the late 20th Century was the discovery of hundreds of buried terracotta warriors in Shaanxi province, China. The unearthing of this fascinating collection was to become known as the famous “Terracotta Army” which was the depiction of the armies of Qin Shi Huang who was the first emperor of China. This replica chess set copies the stunning figures found near the city of Xi’an and makes them ready to do battle once more on a chessboard of your choice.

The Terracotta Army was discovered by accident in 1974 when a group of farmers were digging a well. Archaeologists, historians and scientific researchers have since studied the site and worked out why, how and when the terracotta statues were made. The life-size figurines were constructed in order to protect the emperor in the afterlife and are known technically as funerary art. It is estimated work began on the army around 246 BC and each figure was made individually in workshops by labourers and local craftsmen. Individual facial features were added so as to make each soldier unique from the next.

This beautifully made chess set might not be as old or as significantly impressive as the astonishing as the terracotta warriors found in the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor. However, each chess piece is beautifully made and is a near exact replica of the famous warriors. For any chess fanatic with an interest in Chinese history, this chess set will make an excellent gift or addition to an interior. The colourful pieces will enhance any setting, in particular a home study, library or office where a certain intellectual ambiance and culturally significant décor is required. Each piece has a satisfying feel and will make chess matches all the more entertaining.
