When furniture is made in Italy, you know the standard and design is going to be of the highest quality. Italian furniture making has a long and proud tradition which is perfectly encapsulated in this delightful 18th Century Maggiolini-style writing desk. Made by skilled Italian craftsmen, the wooden writing desk is a gorgeous furniture piece ideal for a home study, library, bedroom or living room. Graceful yet strong, its refined beauty is instantly apparent.

Giuseppe Maggiolini, of which this style of furniture is named, was a pre-eminent cabinet-maker in the Italian city of Milan during the late 18th Century. Much of his work can be described as Late Baroque but he is now more well known for the block-like neoclassical forms of the cabinets, commodes, writing desks and tables he designed and crafted. These were usually veneered with detailed and richly intricate marquetry vignettes and borders. The height of Maggiolini’s success came with the commission to design a table for Napoleon’s coronation in Milan.

This 18th Century Maggiolini-style writing desk has been crafted from high quality wood as was always the case with the original Maggiolini designs. Individually finished by hand, the writing desk consists of three drawers for the storing of paper and writing instruments. The surface of the desk has been exquisitely inlaid with walnut ebony, boxwood and palissander (rosewood). Specially antiqued brass hardware finish off the classical style of the writing table with an understated sophistication.
