Dishevelled Home Interior Pictures and Ruminations

There’s something about dishevelled and run-down interiors that I rather enjoy. As long as their original style was aesthetically pleasing in the first place, the lack of attention and care can result in some beautifully rustic images. I’ve always found that an interior doesn’t have to be perfectly kept to be appealing and homely. A selection of examples of what I mean can be seen below.

I was around the age of nine and my parents had just bought an old house, more than 120 years old which had been a former police station. The views from the windows were divine. Welsh rolling hills and valleys filled with sheep spread across the vista and all the way to the horizon.

They had been left to rot away and paintwork and wallpaper was peeling off around the entire interior of each room. However, there was such an appealing quality to the ambiance of the interiors which I found both romantic, rustic and delightfully attractive. In many of my designs, I have tried to repeat this atmosphere and have even used techniques that age the walls and furnishings to look older and more worn than they really are.

The typical old welsh country cottage sink of which we found a number dotted about left in fields to gather grass and wild nettles. In this image above one sees the top of a stone sink with a wonderful tap system and stone shelf above. Mixing and matching various elements in this way instead of the usual fitted kitchen styles can add so much more character to a kitchen, bathroom or utility room.
