Decorative hand made furniture is a popular choice for many people around the world. There’s nothing quite like the special individual quality of wooden carvings decorated by artisans from Asia, Africa or South America. An example of what I mean is this decorative corner display shelving made by Indian craftsmen in the city of Saharanpur in the Uttar Pradesh region of northern India.
The three corner shelves are made from Sheesham wood, also known as Indian Rosewood, Shisham, Sissoo or Sisu. The wood is from the rosewood genus and is native to the Indian Subcontinent. It’s known wordwide as one of the finest woods for the making of cabinets and similar types of furniture. You can read more about this interesting species of tree here: Shisham.
As you may notice from the picture, the Saharanpur craftsmen have etched brass inlay on to the wood. This gives it a beautiful period look and is particular to these artisan’s style. In fact, the technique if a mixture of styles including those from the ancient Indian, Persian and Mughal wood workers. The city is now well known for its high quality furniture and sculptures made from wood.
Intricate hand carvings adorn the surface of each of the three shelves which adds a delightfully beautiful decoration to the already attractive form. This corner display shelving unit is ideal for placing in the corner of a living room, dining room or hallway, where sculptures, pottery or even fine china can be displayed for all the family to enjoy. If you’ve just designed an Indian themed interior, then this will make an excellent addition to the overall ambiance of the room.
