The Blow Up Coffee Table by Alessi is a fascinating and unique creation by the widely respected Italian-Brazilian Campana brothers. Humberto and Fernando Campana have been designing furniture together in San Paolo since 1983. Their radical exhibition in 1986 called “Gli inconfortabili” (The Inconsolable) brought them worldwide recognition and they have since become major names in their field. Designer Philippe Starck is a known admirer and in 1998 the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York dedicated the “Progetto 66” exhibition to them.
Pandemonium and poetry are embodied in the Blow Up Table by Alessi. The successfully experimental design brings together chaos with a certain functional order. A circular glass top rests on the various stainless steel shards creating a wonderful visually stimulating explosion of form. If your cup of coffee won’t wake you in the morning, this item of furniture surely will.
I’ve mentioned the hugely successful Italian design factory Alessi in previous posts (Tea Kettle with Bird Shaped Whistle). They have been building household products since 1921 and manufacture some of the most unique furniture items one can find.
The Blow-Up Coffee Table costs $305.
